Gutter work around Marietta follows a calendar set by three things: rain, pollen and leaf drop. The rainfall column below is NOAA's 1991–2020 monthly normal for Atlanta, the nearest official normal to Marietta. Pollen season peaks in late winter and early spring — Atlanta's count hit a record 14,801 grains per cubic meter on March 29, 2025. Oak and sweetgum leaves come down in fall, and sweetgum litters lawns every autumn with its spiky seed balls. Loblolly pines shed needles all year, with a fall drop of older interior needles.

Rainfall: NOAA 1991–2020 normals, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (station USW00013874). Annual total 50.43 inches.

Reading the calendar

Rain is spread through the year. No month averages less than about 3.3 inches, so there is no true dry season to wait for. What changes is how the rain arrives: July, the wettest month, is also the peak of thunderstorm season in north and central Georgia, when short, heavy storms test whether gutters are big enough and downspouts are clear.

Debris comes in two waves. Pollen and catkins in spring, leaves in late fall, needles throughout. On wooded lots that means two cleanings a year — late spring and early winter — or guards.

October is the quiet month. The driest month on the calendar, before most leaves fall, is a practical window for installation or replacement work, and new gutters with guards then go into leaf season ready.

Two cleanings or one?

  • Open sky, few trees: one cleaning in late fall or early winter.
  • Mixed hardwoods and pines: late spring and early winter.
  • Pines directly over the roof: two or three a year, or guards.

The gutter cleaning page covers what each visit should include.
